Title: Phillip F. La Follette at T-Beach Whittling Club
Description: Three men sit on improvised seats (boards on barrels) at the T-Beach Whittling Club, located on the north coast of New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea). They are (left to right) Frank E. Mason, Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Navy from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lieutenant Colonel Phillip F. La Follette of Madison, Wisconsin, and Raymond Clapper, a columnist. They were on their way from Cape Gloucester to Milne Bay and Guadalcanal in the Solomon Sea. Signs behind them indicate where the different ranks should sit. The signs read, "Generals", "Colonels", "Majors", Captains" and "Other Ranks." A tent, with soldiers sitting on cots, with a sign "Message Center Beachmaster," is behind them and on the right is a building built in the indigenous style. Special note by Robert Doyle: "Frank E. Mason is a Vice President of NBC (on leave) and is the son of the late Dr. George Franklin Mason." Lieutenant Colonel Phillip F. La Follette was three times Governor of Wisconsin.
