Small Vessels Carry Supplies
Small fishing vessels carried supplies for troops marching up the coast towards Buna, New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea). Here soldiers lower cases over the side to an outrigger canoe for the trip to shore. Indigenous crews helped load and unload supplies. The tree-covered shore and hills are in the background. Photograph taken by Sergeant Leland Score of Menomonie, Wisconsin and selected for publication by Robert Doyle. Sergeant Score was a clerk at division headquarters and carried his camera with him through the Papuan campaign. He was taking the photographs to be used by the division for an official history after the war. |
