Menu Cover for Fifth Anniversary of the Secretary-Generalship of Mr. Trygve Lie
Front cover of the menu and program for the Fifth Anniversary of the Secretary-Generalship of Trygve Lie, first Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), with Lie in Viking attire at the helm of a wooden ship whose sails feature phrases relating to the work of the UN ("Collective Security," "Technical Assistance," "Human Rights Declaration," "Genocide Convention," "Peace in Kashmir," "Peace in Palestine," "Peace in "). Byron Price ladles out water from a barrel to a man whose shirt reads "CGS," while other figures steer the wheel, row the oars, keep a lookout, wave flags, and read a declaration. Figures in the cartoon are often identified by name. The emblem on the ship is the number "5" flanked by two olive branches, a dragon bites one of the oars, and a dove with an olive branch perches on the prow. The two lifesavers read, "Honi soit qui mal y pense" ("shamed be he who thinks ill of it") and "Fluctuat nec mergitur" ("it floats and does not sink"). |
