ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
John P. Wood settled in Wausau about 1927 where he established Northern Airways, Inc., a commerical airline business. In the same year Wood placed fifth in the National Air Reliability Tour. The National Air Tour was an annual national competition sponsored by Henry Ford from 1925 through 1931 in order to raise public awareness of aviation, show off new planes, and persuade the public of the safety of flying. In 1928 Wood again competed in the national tour and in that year the tour stopped at Wausau's Alexander Field for the first time. By the time the tour arrived in Wausau John Wood was already the winner based on points, and the greeting accorded him by his home town was one of the largest aerial events in Wisconsin prior to the modern EAA Fly-ins. Wood died in September, 1929 when his airplane was struck by lightning.
