Wire grass was harvested from marshland around Montello in the early part of the twentieth century. Factories in Oshkosh (Oshkosh Co. and Waite & Co.), Green Bay (Willow Grass Co.) and St. Paul, MN (Crex Carpet Company) fabricated inexpensive rugs from the grass. Montello photographer and printer Lucy Kaufmann may have created this postcard; she used similar type to label her work. |
