Gemini 8 Astronauts

Gemini 8 Astronauts | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Astronauts Neil A. Armstrong (right) and David R. Scott, the two-man crew scheduled to fly Gemini 8, visiting the Lockheed plant where the Agena target vehicle was built. The astronauts' visit was part of a Lockheed public relations campaign to draw attention to the Agena rocket and explain past failures. Armstrong and Scott inspected the Agena before it was shipped to Cape Kennedy for launch. They successfully docked with the Agena, although a malfunctioning thruster necessitated an early end to the mission. A history of this public relations campaign was submitted by Lockheed to an award competition of the Public Relations Society of America. PRSA records are available for research at the Wisconsin Historical Society Archives.
