Map or Atlas
Carte Generale de la Terre ou Mappemonde: Avec les Quatre Principeaux Sistemes et les Figures des Sept Planetes
A map of the world in two hemispheres, with the borders of the continents hand-colored. This map contains 14 spherical diagrams of the cosmos, portraying the various planetary theories from the geocentric model of Ptolemy to the heliocentric model of Copernicus. Notes accompany each sphere describing the models. Other illustrations adorn the sides of the map, the most noteworthy of which is the armillary sphere at the bottom between the hemispheres. Desnos was among the first cartographers to include depictions of scientific instruments rather than or along side the more traditional depictions of mythological figures. |
