Theatrum Belli in America Septentrionali: II. Foliis Comprehensum | Map or Atlas | Wisconsin Historical Society
This map shows the eastern half of North America during the French and Indian war, including cities, borders, Native American Land, forts, and detailed geographical features in relief. Unlike most pats of America during this time, the cartographer is neither English or French, but German, giving a rare and neutral depiction of North America during this time. Furthermore, Rhode's map is particularly interesting as this is one of the earliest maps to depict the topography of America west of the Appalachian Mountains and past the Mississippi River, showing a marshy savanna in the Wabash and Illinois valleys, and using countless illustrated trees to represent the unsettled areas of the west in comparison to the east. The borders and cartouche are hand-painted; the cartouche shows a hunter with a spear under palm trees.
