Map or Atlas
Atlantis Insula à Nicolao Sanson Antiquitati Restituta: Nunc Demum Majori Formâ Delineata, et in Decem Regna, Iuxtá Decem Neptuni Filios Distributa
A mysterious mixture of mythology, ancient geography, and late 17th century knowledge of the American coastline. This map shows North and South America, but here described as the mythical Island of Atlantis. The coastlines are fairly accurate, and the continents are drawn to mimic the curve of the earth, rather than laid flat. Sanson marks few place names beyond Mexico City and Cuzco (shown pictorially) but subdivides the Americas into ten regions named after the sons of Neptune. The Great Lakes are shown, though half of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan are left incomplete. California is shown as an Island. Blocks of descriptive texts explain the land and regions. Illustrations of Neptune riding a sea shell chariot with his sons adorns the title cartouche. |
