Map or Atlas
North America: Corrected from the Observation Communicated to the Royal Society at London and the Royal Academy at Paris
Map of North America showing the European claims, Native American land and villages, rivers, lakes, cities, and notes on explorers, discoveries, and topographical features based on (often misunderstood) reports of Native Americans. Many of the notes discuss the most debated cartographic discoveries of the period. The elaborate and detailed cartouche in the upper right corner features two nude women and a man. One woman (on the right) holds a baby and an umbrella, the other sits on the right, adorned in feathers, next to a pot of gold, and holds a short spear or scepter. The man holds a bow and points to the crown of feathers at the top of the cartouche. Various animals, plants, and fruit further adorn the cartouche. Below sits a coat of arms. |
