ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Frank Hess and his four sons are fitting and inserting Kooling Koils. The cooperage operated for 62 years (1904-1966) making beer, wine and whiskey barrels, becoming the largest cooperage in Wisconsin. Frank Hess Sr. apprenticed in Pilsen Bohemia, came to America in 1889 and Henry Fauerbach asked him to come to Madison in 1904 to make barrels for his brewery. Hess also made barrels for many other breweries in Wisconsin and elsewhere. One of 27 photographs documenting the manufacture of oak barrels at the Frank J. Hess and Sons factory and published in Wisconsin Tales and Trails Spring 1966. This photograph was published in the Wisconsin State Journal on June 29, 1958.
