Wisconsin State Capitol Fence and Church

Wisconsin State Capitol Fence and Church | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Elevated wintertime view of the intersection of South Carroll and West Main Streets, showing the First Baptist Church constructed in 1854, the wooden fence and hitching rail that surrounded the Capitol Square, and the street lights then in use. Before their building was constructed, the Baptists, like many other congregations, worshiped in the Wisconsin State Capitol building. The State Historical Society rented space in the basement of the Baptist Church until 1866 when it moved across the street to the Capitol. The wooden fence in this photograph was replaced with an ornamental iron and stone fence in 1873.
