ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This building is now Mansion Hill Inn, a Madison city landmark and a bed and breakfast. The house has been known by the various surnames of its owners (in chronological order): the McDonnell, Garnhart, Conover and Pierce families. This photograph was taken in 1895 during the residency of the Conover Family. Built in 1857-1858, the house was designed by August Kutzbock (1814-1868) and Samuel Hunter Donnell (1820-1860), architects of the Third Wisconsin Capitol, for Alexander A. McDonnell, the contractor for the first phase of the Capitol construction. As one of the few extant Kutzbock and Donnell designs, the Romanesque Revival Pierce House provides insight into the architectural context of the third Capitol.

(Building also known as Pierce House, Garnhardt House, McDonnell House, Mansion Hill Inn.)
