The Isle of Wight off the English Coast
While passing through the English Channel in May 1856 Hölzlhuber viewed the Isle of Wight. "The island is located in the English Channel not far from Hampshire. The form is like that of a pear and it has an area of 75 English miles....The lovely green which is special (to) the English forest and meadows covered the different hills, while at the end the so called Needles with its light tower finished the picture. This was the last country of Europe that showed us its incomparable beauty....tears came in my eyes...this was a farewell from my beloved home country, perhaps forever." His sketch shows the lighthouse, and six other sailing ships on the water, one with two smokestacks. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
