A Farm on the Ottowa River in Canada
On a very hot day in August 1858 Hölzlhuber visited the farm of Jack Smith, an Irishman who had immigrated to Canada eleven years previously with his wife and four children. At this farm Hölzlhuber learned that "the one who dreams that America is an Eldorado is mistaken. America is a country of sweat and hard work." Smith told him that in their first few years they nearly despaired, but that now a large part of his property was arable and the farm was worth a very high price. The scene shows two large buildings near the River, with two large tipis in the back against the forest. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
