Hotel Eagle in the Bush on Lake St. Clair in Canada
In September 1859, by which time he was a regular contributor to Frank Leslie's Illustrated Paper, Hölzlhuber took his first extensive trip to lower Canada. He came upon this hotel after crossing Lake St. Clair, east of Detroit. There he met two trappers, a hunter, and two fur dealers from the Hudson's Bay Company who subsequently accompanied him northward. They walked for fourteen days, passing many Menominee Indian villages. He left his new friends in Ottawa City and took the steamer Kingston to go back across Lake Ontario to Hamilton, a trip lasting two days. Shown here at the Hotel Eagle are an attached small stable, and a woman at the stove of an outdoor kitchen. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner. |
