Title: Eben Peck Cabin
Description: The Eben Peck cabin, the first house in Madison, Wisconsin, was built in June, 1837. In 1891 young Isabella Dengel (1878-1904) based this painting of the cabin on an 1869 painting by Mrs. E.E. Bailey, which itself had been based on the earlier recollections of pioneer settlers to Madison. Isabella painted her version for former state senator George B. Burrows (1832-1909) of Madison, in exchange for another painting which he had given to her. The Dengel farm was on the site of the present Burrows Park. The State Historical Society of Wisconsin received the painting after the 1919 death of Burrows.
