Jane Jennings
Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Jane Jennings, a Civil War nurse. She was raised in rural Green County, Wisconsin, and when her brother Guilford Jennings was wounded in 1863 she attempted to volunteer as a nurse, but was turned down because at the age of 24 she was thought to be too young. After appealing to the head of all the Washington D.C. hospitals she was allowed to serve. At the age of 59 she volunteered again during the Spanish-American War. She died on December 31, 1917 of a stroke. |
