Alexander Simplot became well known during the Civil War for furnishing many of the sketches used by Harper's Weekly in their coverage of the war. Because of his location, Simplot primarily covered the war on the Mississippi River and Missouri. Working primarily in pencil, he captured the flavor of the war in the Transmississippi. He was the only artist on hand to cover the Battle of Memphis which took place on June 6, 1862. |
