Fairchild Dining Room | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
The ornate interior of the Lucius Fairchild house at 302 South Wisconsin Avenue (renamed Monona Avenue in 1877). Built by Lucius' father Jairus Fairchild in 1850, the house was redecorated with furniture from Paris purchased during Lucius' decade abroad in the 1870s. During the Fairchild's residence their home was considered the epitome of fashion and taste. It is said to have been paneled in red birch and cedar from Wisconsin. We know the picture was taken after 1880 because of the portrait of Fairchild in the corner which was painted by John Singer Sargent in that year. The portrait is now part of the Historical Society's museum collection; see Image #1884 or Museum #1942.305
