Harvard College, in 1774, it's funds running low received special permission for a lottery scheme to erect Stoughton Hall. Privilege renewed in 1794. the Lottery prolonged its drawings for over ten years, producing $18,400 net. The College itself invested $2000 in tickets, and itself drew the principal prize of $10,000 on ticket No. 18,547. The parallel lines in red was a device to prevent successful alteration of the numbers as the lines on the ticket had to fit those of the stub. |
