Eben and Roseline Peck Cabin
Photographic print of an amateur painting, probably representing the "first house in Madison, Wisconsin." The Peck Cabin, one of the many free variations on an original painting by Mrs. E.E. Bailey, painted around 1869. This canvas was originally an early 19th century landscape, partly painted over about 1885 to insert the cabin, figures, and foreground. Inscribed in paint on the reverse side: "First House built in Madison, Erected by Eben Peck, on lot 6, block 107, in May 1837." Currently (1965) in custody of the Mendota State Hospital, Department of Occupational Therapy. |

An early museum record card states that Simeon Mills presented a painting of this subject by C.A. Johnson to the Wisconsin Historical Society in 1858. This is possibly the painting referred to. |
