Professor Robert von Schlagintweit, Geographer
Carte-de-visite portrait of Robert von Schlagintweit (1833-1885), German orientalist, geographer and explorer. Along with his oldest brother Hermann, Robert was one of the first Europeans to cross the Kunlun Mountain range. He became a professor of geography at the University of Giessen in 1863. Shown here sitting in three-quarter profile, with a large beard. His name, along with "1869," have been handwritten at the bottom of the image. |
