Birds-eye view of a Wisconsin Civil War regiment on parade in Fond du Lac, as drawn by Louis Kurz from the Marr Street Methodist Church. The regiment cannot be definitely identified, although only two regiments trained in Fond du Lac at Camp Hamilton (later Camp Hamilton). The 3rd Wisconsin Infantry marched off to war in July, 1861, wearing the gray uniforms issued to Wisconsin's first eight regiments; the 14th Regiment departed in March, 1862 wearing the blue uniforms that had by then become the Union standard. The foliage suggests that Milwaukee lithographs Kurz & Seifert meant to depict the summertime departure of the 3rd, and that they changed the uniform color to satisfy the later standard. After the war Kurz moved to Chicago and, in partnership with Alexander Allison, became famous for its historical chromolithographs.

The published catalogue of the Phelps Stokes Collection (New York Public Library, 1933) gives still a fuller description of the various buildings.
The identify of the regimental on parade has not been confirmed. Two Wisconsin Civil War regiments trained at a camp in Fond du Lac: the 3rd Infantry which departed in June, 1861, wearing grey uniforms, and the 14th which departed in March, 1862, wearing blue uniforms. The foliage, which may be artistic license, suggest this engraving is meant to depict the 3rd. |
