Confiscated German Jewelry
Harry B. Haley (right) bought the diamond pin and 662 jewel bracelet held by George H. Brown, chief deputy U.S. Marshal for the Western Wisconsin District court for $1,300. A soldier, Rudolph W. Schleusner of Menomonie, had found the jewelry in an abandoned house in Germany and sent them to his wife. When the Schleusner's asked the customs office about import duties, an appraiser said they were worth $1,200 and Federal Judge Patrick T. Stone ordered them forfeited to the government. |
