Nash and Truman
Philleo Nash (playing the guitar), Presidential adviser on Minority Affairs, entertains President Harry Truman (in the sunglasses), with folk songs during a vacation at the Little White House in Key West. Only a few weeks later (January, 1952), Senator Joseph R. McCarthy charged that Nash, a native of Wisconsin, had Communist associations during the 1940s. The President strongly supported his assistant and Nash was totally cleared by the Loyalty Review Board. In 1956 Wisconsin elected Nash as lieutenant governor. |
