Copy of ambrotype made by W.H. Pearson in Macomb, Illinois. Taken five days after the first debate with Senator Stephen A. Douglas at Ottawa, Illinois. Lincoln lost the race to Douglas, but two years later won over the same opponent in the contest for President. The ambrotype was last owned in 1888 by Mr. Richard Watson Gilder, editor of the "Century Magazine," when it was lost in the fire of the Century Building in New York. |
