Title: General Carl Schurz
Description: Engraved portrait of Carl Schurz, a German immigrant who settled in Wisconsin in 1855. President Abraham Lincoln appointed Schurz to the rank of general in order to encourage enlistment among the nation's German immigrants. Unfortunately, Schurz had no military experience. Although he labored to overcome his deficiencies and exhibited personal bravery, Schurz's military career was a disappointment.
