Democratic Ticket
1860 Presidential Democratic ticket headed by John C. Breckenridge (it should be spelled Breckinridge), and the vice-president, Joseph Lane, that was distributed in the state of Virginia. The Democratic Party split into northern and southern slates that year, in part permitting the election of the Republican Abraham Lincoln. The election had 4 candidates, Stephen A. Douglas for the National Democratic Party, John C. Breckinridge for the Southern Democratic Party, John Bell for the new Constitutional Union Party and Abraham Lincoln for the Republican Party. The name of the voter written on the back to indicate his vote for the entire Breckinridge slate is Duncan Robertson, Jr. Many of the ballots from this time period display a hole in the middle from the spindle they were placed on. The ticket is decorated with engraved portraits of both candidates and a statement of their belief that citizens should be able to carry their institutions, that is slavery, into the territories. |
