H.H. Bennett and Charles Brainard | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Stereograph of Henry Hamilton Bennett working on a camera in a private car. This is the private car the Wisconsin Central Railroad provided for Bennett and Brainard. Bennett made the exposure by pulling a string attached to the camera. Note the knife and gun he carried with him onboard. In an article published during the trip, he explained they had been hired to portray the beauty along the line. He described Bennett’s “double-barreled” stereo camera and noted the persuasive power of images in the guidebook. Statistics might be fishy, but “photographs never lie.” He is seated near Charles Rollin Brainard, who is working on a typewriter at a desk on the left. There is a rifle propped up between them.
