Charles Stewart | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Seated portrait of Corporal Charles Stewart (b. 1832), Company B, 8th Wisconsin Infantry, wearing the one of the grey uniforms in which Wisconsin's first eight regiments left the state. In 1861, the Northern states purchased their own uniforms, and Wisconsin selected grey, possibly because it was the color uniforms of the New York militia where Wisconsin purchased the majority of its uniforms. Not until the fall of 1861 did blue become the standard color for Union troops. Stewart, a Greenbush farmer, rose in the ranks and was mustered out in 1865 as Captain.
