Three-quarter length carte-de-visite portrait of Major General John G. Foster in uniform, holding his hat. At the start of the war he was the chief engineer of the fortifications of Charleston Harbor, and was a leading participant in the bombardment of Fort Sumter. He later took part in General Burnside's North Carolina expedition, and commanded the Department of North Carolina, the Department of Ohio, the Department of the South, and the Department of Florida respectively. |
