John Pope | Print | Wisconsin Historical Society
Engraved waist-up carte-de-visite portrait of Brigadier General John Pope. At the start of the Civil War he commanded the troops in northern Missouri. From February to June 1862, he headed the Army of the Mississippi, and during this time he rose to the rank of Major General of volunteers and Brigadier General of the regular army. His success on the Mississippi River resulted in his appointment to command the Army of Virginia. However, this appointment was short-lived because of his defeat at the Second Battle of Manassas. After the battle he was sent to Minnesota to conduct the 1862 offensive against the Dakota.
