Southern Menagerie Is Coming
A circus traveling on the road has three cages, the first and second are flying the Confederate flag. A stone at the side of the road says "TO BOSTON." "THE STRIPED DAVIS" is painted on the first wagon containing a tiger, "THE OLD BEAR-RE-GARD" on the second wagon containing a bear and "THE LETCHER-OUS BEA" is on the third wagon. "BEA" may be referring to General Beale or General Beall. The caption below reads "SOUTHERN MENAGERIE" and above reads "IS COMING." Red and blue ink on cream envelope, image on left side. |
