Departure of a Colony of Emigrants for Colorado
Crowd gathered at Chicago & St. Louis Railroad Station to see off a colony of emigrants from Chicago who planned to settle in Colorado on a tract of land purchased by the German Colonization Society of Colfax, Colorado. The masts of several ships can be seen behind the depot. A sign on one of the rail cars paraphrases Frederick Jackson Turner: "Westward the star of empire takes its course. German Colorado CC. Organized Chicago, August 24, 1869. Carl Wulsten, Pres. Under Auspices of National Land Co." |
