Lt. Nils J. Gilbert
Full-length portrait of Nils J. Gilbert, a first lieutenant in Company A, 15th Wisconsin Infantry. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He held residence in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. On October 12, 1861 he enlisted as a first sergeant and was mustered into service in Madison, Wisconsin on December 12, 1861 with Company F, 15th Wisconsin Infantry at the age of 19. In December 1862 he was severely wounded at Stone River, Tennessee and was sent to a hospital in Nashville, Tennessee to recover. On October 8, 1864, Nils J. Gilbert was transferred to Company A, 15th Wisconsin Infantry and was commissioned as first lieutenant. He was mustered out of service on December 12, 1864 with honors in Chattanooga, Tennessee. |
