Vignetted quarter-length cabinet card portrait of James Overson, a private in C Company, 15th Wisconsin Infantry. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He resided in Norway, Wisconsin. On November 5, 1861, he enlisted at Waterford, Wisconsin and was mustered into service in Madison, Wisconsin on December 2, 1861, at the age of 23. He was severely wounded on September 19, 1863, during the battle of Chickamauga. He was discharged on August 09, 1864 in Madison, Wisconsin while being cared for at Harvey Hospital. On August 20, 1867 he received the brevetted rank of captain in "recognition of distinguished gallantry displayed by him at the battle of Chickamauga, Georgia where his Company, being hard pressed and his captain having fallen, he took position in front and encouraged his comrades to maintain their position in the fight."
