Portrait of General Frederick C. Winkler
Quarter-length studio portrait of General Frederick C. Winkler of Milwaukee from the 1895 Columbian Biographical Dictionary and Portrait Gallery of the Representative Men of The United States: Wisconsin Volume; p 595. From the accompanying biographical sketch: He was born in Bremen, Germany on 15 March 1838, and emigrated with his parents, Carl and Elizabeth (Overbeck) Winkler, in 1842 to Milwaukee. [Actually, Frederick came in 1844 with his mother; his father had come in 1842 to get established.] He studied law and was admitted to the bar at Madison in 1859. In 1862 he raised a company of volunteers, which became Company B, 26th Wisconsin Infantry. He was elected captain, then promoted up the ranks to Major in November 1863. After fighting in a number of major battles and skirmishes, the 26th Wisconsin Infantry was mustered out in Milwaukee on 28 June 1865, after which Winkler was breveted by the War Department as a Brigadier-General. He resumed practicing law in Milwaukee, in various partnerships through the years. In 1964 he married Frances M. Wightman, by whom he had six daughters and three sons. |
