Title: Poster for "Rip Van Winkle"
Description: Color lithograph on paper. Across top in caps "A splendid scenic revival of the greatest of American dramas." Title runs beneath. Scene from play in which Rip pleads with Gretchen as she holds two children. Running at bottom is line from the play: "Gretchen, you turn me out of your house into the storm?" Based on the date of the litho this is a later addition to the many revivals of Boucicault's and Joseph Jefferson's 1866 adaptation (itself based on James Barnes's earlier version, which Jefferson played in London). After Jefferson revised Boucicualt's text the play became one of the most popular offerings on the American stage. The 1905 production, at the Wallack Theatre, featured Thomas Jefferson as Rip and Ethel Fuller as Gretchen.
