Information:
Robert Brady Lawrence Murphy was born on December 5, 1901 at 711 Langdon Street in Madison, Wisconsin. He received a B.A. (1929) and an M.A. (1930) in history from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. He earned his law degree at the university in 1932 and practiced law in Madison from that time on. Murphy served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1943-1946). He spent a lifetime working on behalf of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. He served on the Sociey's Board of Curators from 1948 to 1990 and held the office of president from 1958 to 1961. To provide financial support for the Society, he founded in 1954 the Wisconsin Historical Foundation, of which he served as member (1954-2001) and president (1960-1990). Murphy was known and loved by his friends for his gentlemanly demeanor and his lively wit. He died on September 11, 2001.
