New Settlers in Taylor County
A promotional card displaying a group of thirteen people outside their new home in Northern Wisconsin. The caption bellow the photograph reads, "These people together with others, making in all a party of seventeen, came from Passaic, New Jersey, six weeks before the above view was taken. The heads of the families were employees in the cotton mills. Upon hearing that good land could be gotten at prices and terms within their means, they came out to investigate, and being thoroughly satisfied they at once erected their home. This is one of them. There is some land in the immediate vicinity which can be purchased at $5.00 an acre on easy terms." |

Part of the promotional materials created by the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company Land Commissioner to publicize the sale of land in northern Wisconsin, primarily in Price, Taylor, and Ashland counties, owned by the railroad, circa 1895. One side of the card has illustrations of farming conditions, crops, forest resources, homesteads, small towns, and rural scenes in northern Wisconsin. A number of the illustrations are from photographs made by Harvey J. Perkins for "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker" and "Hand book of Price County." The reverse side of the card has text touting the abundance of resources available in northern Wisconsin, some of which was taken from "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker," edited by William A. Henry. |
