Title: Lincoln-Schurz Letter
Description: Brief letter from President Abraham Lincoln to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton asking to see the files for Carl Schurz of Wisconsin and Milo Smith Haskell (Hascall) of Indiana so that he might review their qualifications for military promotion. Schurz was appointed brigadier general. Schurz had no military training, but Lincoln promoted him in order to encourage enlistment by German immigrants. The original Lincoln autograph was presented to the Historical Society by Hascall, however, a photocopy rather than the original was scanned.
