Title: Man Sampling Malt for Testing
Description: A worker samples finished malt at the Rahr Malting Company, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, circa 1950. He is using a hand-held sampling probe, a tube with multiple pockets along its length, which can be rotated to secure samples from various depths. This technique can locate areas of inferior grain layered in the bulk. Because bulk malt is not a homogeneous material, samples for testing must be taken from multiple locations to insure that the test results represent the container as a whole.
