Swimming Hole in the South Pacific
| Robert Doyle's caption says it best, "The ol' swimmin' hole, South Pacific style. Every afternoon it is filled with shouting soldiers in their birthday suits, seeking relief from the sweltering heat, swimming in the cold, crystal clear water or lounging on the huge rocks. The natural pool, formed by a cascading mountain stream, is 12 feet deep." In another caption he says, "One compensation for the tropical heat, dust, mud and insects is this mountain pool discovered by our soldiers." The soldiers uniforms can be seen drying on the rocks. The swimming hole is located on Goodenough Island, in the Solomon Sea, New Guinea (present day Papua New Guinea). |

| This image was published in the Milwaukee Journal on November 29th, 1943, and March 26th, 1944. The image and article appear on page 104 and 139 of the clipping book, Anybody Here From Wisconsin?, a reprint of the scrapbook kept by Robert Doyle's mother. Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan. |
