Wisconsin Historical Society Press: Connecting People to the Past for 150 Years
In 1855 the Wisconsin Historical Society Press published its first book: Volume I of the Wisconsin Historical Collections. With that slim volume, 120 pages of historical documents showcasing the holding of the newly founded Historical Society, the WHS Press began a commitment to connecting the people of Wisconsin and the Midwest with their past while illuminating the importance of history in the present.
One hundred fifty years later, the Wisconsin Historical Society Press is the state’s oldest book publisher, with more than one hundred titles in print. Throughout our long history we have explored Wisconsin history topics in a variety of formats and styles, from booklets and research guides to the six-volume History of Wisconsin series. In recent years we have concentrated on creating books that appeal to a wider and more varied audience: lively narratives about interesting people and events; fresh and engaging exploration of well-examined topics; stories that speak to our regional community but also reach across borders to new readers. Our books for elementary and secondary students bring history to life for a new generation of readers. And our quarterly Wisconsin Magazine of History presents the stories and images of the people and places of Wisconsin’s past.
As we look ahead, the WHS Press remains committed to excellence in publishing and to engaging readers with fresh perspectives on the past. We believe that a deeper understanding of our past will help guide us in the future.
