Supplemental Online-only Activity for Chapter 6
I Saw It on the 6 O'Clock News: Wisconsin Forest HistoryOverview In this lesson, students learn about 150 years of events in Wisconsin that have led to the forests of today. They participate in a live newscast from the past by conducting interviews of being interviewed. After watching the newscast, the class organizes the news events into a timeline and draws pictures to represent these events. LEAF Program Information This lesson is a sample lesson from LEAF, Wisconsin¿s K-12 forestry education program. The LEAF program was formed from a partnership between the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources - Division of Forestry and the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education at UW-Stevens Point. LEAF provides forestry education resources for Wisconsin educators, including a K-12 forestry lesson guide, on-line forestry-related resources, and urban forestry and wildland fire lessons. Services include professional development opportunities for Wisconsin teachers, school forest assistance, and curriculum consulting. LEAF also provides a directory of forestry field experience providers, workshops for non-formal educators, forestry landowners, and foresters, and various special event opportunities.
LEAF Lesson Guide The LEAF Wisconsin K-12 Forestry Lesson Guide provides educators with complete interdisciplinary units designed to present an overview of forests and forestry in Wisconsin. The Lesson Guide is divided into six units: K-1, 2-3, 4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-12. Units contain between five and eight classroom lessons, a careers exploration, and up to three field enhancements. All lesson materials are correlated to Wisconsin Model Academic Standards. Teachers receive the Lesson Guide in a 12-hour workshop that covers background information on Wisconsin¿s forests and an introduction to the use of the lesson materials. The workshop is offered around the state at various times and can be taken for graduate credit.
