Date: October 2006; Paperback $12.95 ISBN-10: 0-87020-373-8 / ISBN-13: 978-0-87020-373-2), by Bob Kann, is the newest addition to the Badger Biographies Series, designed to help upper-elementary and middle-school readers explore the stories of Wisconsin people. "A Recipe for Success" tells the story of Lizzie Black Kander and the dynamic role she played in her community. This biography features numerous recipes from her cookbook, "The Settlement Cookbook: The Way to a Man's Heart," which raised millions of dollars to help Milwaukee children in the early 1900s, becoming the most successful fund-raising cookbook in history. Kander originally created the cookbook to assist young Jewish immigrant girls in cooking nutritious "American-style" meals. The proceeds of the cookbook helped build Milwaukee's first settlement house and later its Jewish Community Center. The cookbook is still in print and proceeds help support Milwaukee's youth today. This delightful biography is filled with humorous asides, exclusive period illustrations, and of course recipes!
