By Diane Holliday The Wisconsin Historical Society Press announces the release of "Mountain Wolf Woman: A Ho-Chunk Girlhood" (Paperback: $12.95; ISBN 13: 978-0-87020-381-7) by Diane Holliday. The book describes the life of a Ho-Chunk girl in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, using the seasons as a backdrop. Central to the story is the movement of Mountain Wolf Woman and her family in and around Wisconsin, including their forced displacement from Wisconsin to Nebraska by the U.S. government. Some, including Mountain Wolf Woman, later returned to Wisconsin, but continued to move around the state to gather and hunt food as the seasons changed. Drawn from her own autobiography as told to her niece anthropologist Nancy Lurie, Mountain Wolf Woman's words are used throughout the story to capture her childhood memories and feelings. In describing Mountain Wolf Woman's life, author Diane Holliday invites young readers to compare their life today with that of someone who lived over a hundred years ago. Diane Holliday earned her Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and worked for fifteen years at the Wisconsin Historical Society. She co-authored "Digging and Discovery: Wisconsin Archaeology" for young readers and has edited several other WHS publications. She currently works for an archaeological and historical consulting firm in Tucson, Arizona.
