"FILL 'ER UP" PROVIDES A GLIMPSE OF THE GLORY DAYS OF WISCONSIN GAS STATIONS The Wisconsin Historical Society Press announces the October release of "Fill 'er Up: The Glory Days of Wisconsin Gas Stations" (ISBN: 978-0-87020-393-0; Hardcover: $29.95). Hit the road with authors Jim Draeger and Mark Speltz for a guided tour of 59 of Wisconsin's vintage gas stations — from cottages to pagodas — in this spirited and nostalgic celebration of these historically significant examples of roadside architecture. Since their unremarkable beginnings as cheap shacks and curbside pumps, gas stations have taken many forms, worn many guises, and have been designed by some of Wisconsin's most distinguished architects. Born at the dawn of the automobile age, the gas station evolved in tandem with the rest of America, responding with architectural and operational changes to the Great Depression, World War II, the postwar boom, the new interstate highway system, and the environmental movements of the late 20th century. A substantial expansion on the Wisconsin Public Television documentary of the same name, this full-color book shows why historic gas stations should be preserved and what place they have in the 21st century and beyond.
