WISCONSIN HISTORICAL SOCIETY PRESS ANNOUNCES PUBLICATION OF "WISCONSIN KOREAN WAR STORIES" The Wisconsin Historical Society Press announces the release of Wisconsin Korean War Stories: Veterans Tell Their Stories from the Forgotten War (ISBN: ISBN 978-0-87020-394-7; Paperback $24.95). The book was edited by Sarah Larsen and Jennifer M. Miller, with introduction by Jeremi Suri. "A focus on Wisconsin stories from the conflict is appropriate and necessary," writes University of Wisconsin-Madison History Professor Jeremi Suri, in the introduction. "It shows how deep the war penetrated American society, transforming lives far removed from the Far East." When North Korea attacked its southern neighbor in the summer of 1950, the world stage suddenly got a lot colder. McCarthyism, détente, the Cold War…all rose on the tide of tensions in Korea. A companion book to the documentary produced by Wisconsin Public Television, Wisconsin Korean War Stories, tells the story of this "forgotten war" through first-person interviews, photographs and letters from Wisconsin men and women. These are the voices of green infantrymen, of farm boys from the heartland, and of small-town nurses in MASH units who treated the wounded and sometimes sent them back into the fray. Wisconsin vets remember the long, cold march to POW camp; weathering a typhoon during the landing at Inchon; swimming the Han River on a reconnaissance mission; kissing the ground after the "Big Switch" (prisoner exchange); and much, much more. Wisconsin Korean War Stories is an emotional reconstruction of what the war meant to Wisconsin people who found themselves caught up in it. They fought courageously and expected to lose their lives. "I felt terribly sorry for what it would do to my mother and father," one vet remembers. From enlistment to front-line combat, Wisconsin Korean War Stories is an unforgettable collection.
